Beat the heat with Kokum

Kokum Sharbat is a popular summer coolant which is perfect to sip on warm days as it is very refreshing and improves the digestive system.

Kokum Sharbat
  • 200g Dry Kokum
  • 4 cups Water
  • 200g Sugar
  • 1 tsp Roasted Cumin Powder
  • 1 tsp Cardamom Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Black salt
  • Salt to taste
  1. Soak the dry kokum in 4 cups of water for 1-2 hours.

  2. Mash it nicely and strain the water.

  3. Add the leftover Kokum in a pan along with sugar, roasted cumin powder, cardamom powder, black salt and regular salt.

  4. Cook on low heat for 6-8 minutes until sugar melts.

  5. Add the Kokum water in the pan and bring the mixture to a boil.

  6. Cook for another 5 minutes.

  7. Remove the pan from heat and let the mixture cool.

  8. Strain the mixture and store in a glass bottle in refrigerator.

  9. To make the sherbat, pour 3 tbsp of kokum concentrate and top up with chilled water.

Kokum Rasam


  • 6 dried kokum
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onions
  • 2 slit green chillies
  • salt to taste
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 4 crushed garlic
  • 1 whole dry kashmiri red chilli , broken into pieces
  • 4 to 5 curry leaves
  • 2 tbsp finely chopped coriander
1.Combine dried kokum, onions, green chillies, salt and 2½ cups of water in a broad non-stick pan, mix well and cover it with a lid and cook on medium flame for 5 to 7 minutes, while stirring occasionally.
2.Heat the oil in a small broad non-stick pan, add the mustard seeds, garlic, kashmiri red chilli and curry leaves and saute on a medium flame for 1 minute.
3.Pour the tempering over kokum-onion mixture, add chopped coriander and serve hot.
